Work It Wednesday

Sticking with the fractions and food theme from Monday, here is a fun way to teach fractions. It will take one bag of m &m’s per student, self control (to count them instead of eating them!), and an m &m’s fraction worksheet. I included my worksheet for you to use.

Tip Tuesday

Every year I have the same issue. My kids take the bathroom pass to the bathroom and it comes back wet and yucky! This year I decided to use necklaces. They are Velcro, so they can easily be put on and taken off the students. This way they don’t get put down on the wet sink, or even worse, the toilet! I bought them from Lakeshore and personalized them to fit our Safari themed classroom.

Memory Monday

Warning: reading this post may make you hungry! Here is a fun song that we sing to help the students remember how to use fractions. You can change it up and add whatever fractions you are learning in your classroom. Thanks to Scholastic Professional Books written by Meish Goldish for the great song!

Fractions

(sung to “When the Saints Go Marching In”)
Oh,when a pizza’s cut in half,

Oh,when a pizza’s cut in half,

There are equal parts for two people,

When a pizza’s cut in half.

Oh,when a pizza’s cut in thirds,

Oh,when a pizza’s cut in thirds,

There are equal parts for three people,

When a pizza’s cut in thirds.

Oh,when a pizza’s cut in fourths,

Oh,when a pizza’s cut in fourths,

There are equal parts for four people,

When a pizza’s cut in fourths.

Oh,when a pizza’s cut in fifths,

Oh,when a pizza’s cut in fifths,

There are equal parts for five people,

When a pizza’s cut in fifths.

Fun Friday

Happy Veteran’s Day! Today is a great day to discuss courage, honor, and patriotism in your class. We invited a veteran to share with the class. What an opportunity for your students to say thank you to someone who sacrificed  so much! A really fantastic book to read is "H is for Honor." Your students will love the writing and pictures as they learn  about the military.

Kids Say Thursday

Me: “Everything is falling today. First my poster off the wall and now the papers off my desk.”
2nd Grader: “That’s because it’s the first day of fall!” (It really was! J)

Work It Wednesday

Writing can be a tricky subject. Some students easily come up with ideas, so they get excited when it's time to write. Others seem to sit there forever and get frustrated. To prevent any frustration, I like to give the students a picture (you can use any clipart from your computer or even a picture from a magazine.) They then have to write three sentences (exclamatory, interrogative, and declarative) all about their picture. Not once did I hear, “I don’t know what to write!”

Here's a sample for you to enjoy. Writing can be a piece of cake! :-)
